Multi Lane Free Flow in Argentina

The new Multi Lane Free Flow tolling system has been inaugurated on the Illia motorway in the City of Buenos Aires.

In Argentina, the Illia motorway is one of the main urban arteries in the city of Buenos Aires and is used by around 120,000 vehicles every day, with high levels of congestion, especially near toll stations. The presence of 28 traditional toll booths caused queues and slowdowns, with a significant impact on both traffic flow and CO₂ emissions.

In this context, the need emerged to adopt a solution capable of ensuring smoother and more sustainable mobility, while also improving the efficiency and reliability of the toll collection system. The aim was to simplify the travel experience and optimise traffic flows along a high-density infrastructure.

To meet this need, Movyon implemented a Multi Lane Free Flow system, replacing traditional toll booths with a technologically advanced gantry capable of enabling fully electronic toll payment, with no barriers and no need to stop.

The system is based on smart gantries equipped with devices for number plate reading, RFID TAG detection and vehicle classification. The data collected is sent in real time to a central management platform, which automatically calculates the toll and enables integration with back-office systems.

Designed to cover up to 11 lanes, the gantry is modular, compact and conceived to ensure operational continuity even during maintenance activities. Advanced monitoring tools support the system, allowing performance to be viewed in real time, any anomalies to be identified and high levels of efficiency to be ensured.

The adoption of Multi Lane Free Flow technology has delivered significant results: the system can manage volumes of up to 120,000 vehicles per day, ensuring 99.9% accuracy in vehicle detection and around 97% accuracy in classification via RFID TAG. These performance levels translate into more precise and reliable toll management, with tangible benefits in terms of reduced journey times, smoother traffic flow and lower emissions.
